China: Two low and intermediate level waste surface disposal sites are currently under construction. The first one is located in Gansu province, not far from the civil reprocessing pilot plant and the Dipowu military reprocessing plant. Construction ended in late September 1998 and qualification was granted on 23 October 1998. According to Chinese National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), the centre will soon begin operation and the first waste shipments are expected shortly. The capacity of the site will be 20 000 m3. The second, surface disposal site, with a capacity of 80 000 m3, will be located in Guangdong province a few kilometres from Daya Bay.
