WORLDWIDE ADVANCES IN RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Forthcoming Projects and Events

7.1 Multinational Repository: In November 2000, Representatives from the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Switzerland drew up proposals that could lead to the creation of an international group to study potential radwaste repository sites. The pilot meeting of the International Repository Interest Group (IRIG), organised by Pangea Resources International, was held in Switzerland, November 2000. The IRIG aims to develop the concept of an multinational repository for high-level waste (HLW) and spent fuel gradually, taking into account both scientific and social issues.

7.2 IAEA Decommissioning Conference: The IAEA will be holding an International Conference entitled "Safe Decommissioning for Nuclear Activities:Assuring the Safe Termination of Practices Involving Radioactive Materials" in Berlin, Germany, 14-18 October 2002. The objective of the conference is to foster information exchange on the safe and orderly termination of practices that involve the use of radioactive substances, including both decommissioning and environmental restoration, and to promote improved coherence internationally on strategies and criteria for the safe termination of practices.
