WORLDWIDE ADVANCES IN RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Disposal Sites - Announcements & Commissions

3.1 France: The French waste agency ANDRA confirmed its announcement of mid- September 1999 that it intends to construct a dedicated site for the disposal of very low level waste (VLLW), by further stating that the facility should enter into operation from 2003. The site will be on an impermeable clay layer next to the current disposal site for low- and intermediate-level waste: the CSA centre in the Aube District. The new centre is expected to come into operation by 2002. It is designed for a total capacity of 750 000 tonnes of VLLW. 80% of the waste received will come from the nuclear industry and the rest will result from the dismantling of factories that used radioactive materials or site rehabilitation works. Waste packages will be placed in compartments dug out of the clay about 5 m deep and covered with a protective membrane. Annual deliveries are expected to be in the region of 20 000 to 30 000 tonnes.

3.2 Taiwan: In October 1999 Taipower and the Taiwanese regulatory body AEC announced that unless a suitable offshore solution for spent fuel storage arises within the next five years, Taipower will resort to on-site dry storage for several decades to come.
