What is strategic link building?

Search engines are continually making changes and upgrades as to how they rank websites. Recently a colossal emphasis was put on building external links from one site to another. So great was the demand for links that a new industry began buying and selling links.
> why are links important?

Strategic link building is simple obtaining quality links from external websites, that are relevant in terms of linking keyword and content.

For example a website about hiring a marquees will benefit from a link that includes the works marquee hire. The website would further benefict from a website that is actually about marquees, ie a wedding site. The more strategic external links you have, the more important your website is in terms of search engines.
